The Shenandoah Masters

The Shenandoah Masters Golf Tournament is an invitational event that first began in 1984.  2014 marked the 30th playing of the Shenandoah Masters and it continues to be a highlight of the golf season.  This event is an 18 hole tournament held each spring at the American Legion Country club.

There are 3 champions crowned at each event.  The Overall Champion, the Handicap Champion, and the Seniors Champion.  18 holes of golf are followed by an evening meal and Masters Ceremony  with prizes,  humor, special awards, and Green Jacket presentations.   The same green jacket first presented at the inaugural event in 1984 still hangs at the Club and is presented each year to a new recipient (fitting some better than others)

Past Champions include Cory Scamman (multiple Overall Champion), Greg Scott (2012 Overall Champion) Martin Mulligan (2010 Overall Champion), Scott Mann (2009 Overall Champion), Bob Larson (Overall and Senior Championships), Gregg Connell,  Andy Dinges (2009 Handicap Champion), Jim Martin (Overall Champion) and Bryan Diekmann (2010 Handicap Champion) - just to name a few from recent years.

Some highlights from the 2014 event:
2014 marked the first ever playoff in Shenandoah Masters history in the Overall Champion division.  Ryan Carlson matched up against defending champion Cory Scamman in a 3 - hole playoff.  A dozen golf carts followed the action down the first fairway.  Despite the gallery and subsequent nerves, Carlson and Scamman each made par on the first hole to move to the par 5 2nd.   Both players hit the fairway off the tee and made clutch putts on the 2nd hole for birdie, and the action continued to the 3rd hole.  The difficult par 3 3rd was playing at 215 yards.  After Carlson made a fine putt for par, Scamman stood over a 12 foot putt to save his par and continue into sudden-death.  The ball seemed to be suspended in air on the edge of the cup as Scamman leaned to the side in an effort to assist gravity and will the ball into the hole.  To the delight of the gallery that had gathered - his efforts met with success and the par putt fell.  The uphill par 4 4th was the first of the sudden-death action. Scamman rolled in a 15 foot putt for birdie and Carlson had the opportunity to match his opponent with yet another 12 foot clutch putt to continue the match.  This time the body-english failed as the ball stayed just off the left edge and Cory Scamman retained his title as the 2014 Shenandoah Masters Champion.

Bill Ditmars won the Senior title, and backed that up with a Senior Club Championship trophy later that year.
Ty Ratliff won his first Shenandoah Masters trophy in the Handicap division.

A $10,000 hole-in-one contest once again went unclaimed, despite some very close shots that did succeed in winning "closest-to-the-pin" prizes.

The evening dinner and ceremony, attended nearly 80 of the golfers and guests featured:
      -  18 flag prizes generously donated by local residents, golfers, and businesses
      -  Additional special door prizes including a 4-burner stainless steel grill
      -  Skins winners
      -  Presentation of trophies, official Masters hats and Green Jackets to the 3 champions
      -  None in attendance felt safe as Bob The-Hit-Man Larson repeated his devestating ALCC Survey-Says game show.
      -  In a very special highlight, the annual "Commissioner's Award"  was presented to Gregg Connell.  This award- in memory of Ron Slauter - is given each year to a recipient who exemplifies Ron's spirit, enthusiasm, and passion for golf and life.   Bob Larson provided a summary of the many accomplishments on and off the golf course by Gregg Connell.  Not the least of which being his upwards of 13 Club Championships (so many even Gregg himself has lost count).  A video and photo slide-show displayed photos, and newspaper clippings featuring just a few of Gregg's many highlights at the American Legion Country Club.
      -  As part of Shenandoah Masters tradition, a moment of silence was held for all of the Shenandoah golf family that were lost over the previous year.

Hope to have another memorable event in 2015!
