MON MAY 6th
|
Both the men's and women's spring golf leagues are ready to head into weekly action. The men started this past Monday, May 4th while the
ladies will begin their weekly play on Tuesday, May 12th. We will try and periodically update league standings throughout their seasons.

Upcoming events at the SGC include:
- First Wednesday of the month men's stag event on the evening of May 6.
- Golf And Bowl Event on Saturday, May 9th. It will be a noon shotgun start with front nine closed until 2:30 p.m.
- Southwest Iowa Seniors (Wobblies) are here on Monday, May 11th in the morning.
The practice area west of the 18th green is getting a lot of use. There are four hitting mats and a 30' high by 50' wide net to hit into.
And there are plenty of practice balls to hit. If you haven't already done so, check it out to loosen up before your next round!
Here are my top five reasons why you should join the Shenandoah Golf Course this year if you are not already a member.
- Competition – anyone who enjoys the thrill of competition should play golf. A golfer is in a constant state of competition not only with
follow golfers, but with the course itself.
- Exercise – for a golfer willing to walk our course, there is tremendous potential for a good workout. Even those who don't walk and ride
the course in a golf cart, there is muscle flexibility maintained by repeatedly swinging a club.
- Longevity – physically golf is not excessively demanding. A golfer can take up the sport and enjoy it for the rest of their life.
- Family – the appeal of golf can span the age range of all members of a family. Golf is a great opportunity to isolate your family from
distractions and focus on spending time together.
- Challenge – even on a familiar course, a player can experiment with different shots or strategy for a hole. Every competitor loves a challenge!
This week's golf slang dictionary term is “Adventureland.” And the definition is “A Round With More Ups And Downs Than A Roller Coaster.”
This week's golf quote from famous people is compliments of former LPGA pro Carol Mann. “The golf swing is a collection of corrected mistakes.”
This week's “In Years Gone By” notable event comes from almost forty two years ago on May 23, 1984. Dr. Robert Creighton made a hole-in-one on the par three 12th hole.
This week's attempt at golf humor – one good shot is all it took to completely ruin my plan to quit golf forever.
The answer to last week's trivia question – What is the area north of the par three 12th green known as to SGC members? The correct answer is the Valley of Death. If you miss the 12th green on the north side, it is almost impossible to get up and down for par. You have to come up a steep incline with a green that runs away from you. Bogeys or double bogeys are common if you end up in the Valley of Death! This week's trivia question – Who won the Southwest Iowa Amateur played at the American Legion Country Club in June, 1970? The answer to this week's trivia question will be in the next FTTG column.

MON MAY 2nd

This is one area [divots] from last night. We are seeing a lot of this on our tees, rough and collars. We want to remind people that areas on the course are not intended for extensive practice. Please use the hitting nets. If you want to see your ball flight, please use the range at sports plex. We understand we don’t have a driving range. With all the play and tournaments coming up we can’t keep the course in good shape and continue to allow people to do this. Going forward, anyone caught doing this on the course will be subject to loss of golf privileges. At the same time we are going through a lot of sand in our divot mix container so we want to thank all the members that are doing their part to keep the golf course in good shape.
