The first Wednesday of the month men's stag was held on the evening of June 3rd. 75 golfers participated in nine holes of golf followed by a meal at the Elm Street Grill. The Weinrich, Rice, and Skillern families supported the event.
The Shenandoah Medical Center Foundation 29th annual golf outing was held at the SGC on Thursday, June 4. A full field of 36 four person teams participated in the event. Unfortunately, heavy rains suspended play approximately two hours after the 12:15 p.m. shotgun start. As usual, the SMC Foundation was the big winner in this annual event! And they couldn't do it without their numerous platinum, gold, cart, scholarship, and on course sponsors!!!
Upcoming events at the SGC include:
1) Shenandoah High School Football Fund Raiser on Friday, June 12th. It's a four person scramble format with a shotgun start at 2:00 p.m. Entry fee is $280 per team and includes a dinner social after golf at the Elm Street Grill.
2) Shenandoah Masters Invitational Tournament on Saturday, June 13th. After 18 holes of golf, there is dinner in the evening provided by the Elm Street Grill followed by awards and coveted green jacket presentation ceremonies. Green jackets will be awarded in four divisions – scratch, handicap, seniors, and legends.
3) Turnbull Child Development Center's 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Sunday, June 14th. Entry fee is $240 per team which includes lunch and a fun pack for each golfer. Registration and lunch starts at 11:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12 noon.
There will be three Youth Golf Camps held during the month of June. Dates are all on Fridays (12th, 19th, and 26th) from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Call the pro shop at (712) 581-9057 to sign up. Lessons include full swing, putting, chipping, and golf course etiquette. Register now – it's $30 per child.

Here's a few tips to improve the pace of play to make your round more enjoyable.
Get to the course in plenty of time
Warm up and hit some practice balls BEFORE your tee time
Switch off your mobile phone
Play “ready golf” within your group
Keep your pre-shot routine short
Limit ball search to a couple minutes
Be aware of golfers behind you
Wave through faster groups
Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simply about being more efficient with your valuable time, as well as everyone else's. Adopting this mindset will ultimately add enjoyment to your golf experience!
This week's golf slang dictionary term is “Grocery Store Golf.” And the definition is “Hitting Your Tee Shot In The 'Fareway'.”
This week's golf quote from famous people is compliments of former PGA tour player, Raymond Floyd. “They call it golf, because all of the other four letter words were taken.”
This week's “In Years Gone By” notable event comes from almost thirty nine years ago on June 18, 1987. Delma Russell had a hole-in-one on the par three 12th hole.
This week's attempt at golf humor – Why do golfers carry an extra pair of pants? In case they get a hole in one.
The answer to last week's trivia question – What SGC golfer holds the unofficial dubious record of most trees hit on one hole? The correct answer is Denny Howard. I happened to be in his group a couple years ago on hole #15 when he tried to prune five different trees on the way to the green. This week's trivia question – At the first Shenandoah Masters Golf Tournament in 1984, what golfer was presented a toilet seat at the awards banquet and announced as the winner of the coveted Urination Award (for most pit stops during the round)? The answer to this week's trivia question will be in the next FTTG column.
